DOH... I just found the answer to my own question - in a Google search of the XFree86 domain. Apparently, if you've backed up X before installing over an existing copy of XFree86 from tarballs, rpm's, whatever, you can copy the old xinitrc and Xclients in the backed up location to their proper place in the new install (rename the newly installed files just in case). Also a 'gnome-session' line in the xinitrc will do the trick.
