[Newbie]Installing Xfree 4.20

When I install XFree4.20 updating from the 4.1 distribution with RedHat 7.2 I'm unable to use Gnome or KDE. The system reboots fine  but displays a console log at login then instead of displaying KDE. When logged in it shows a box called xsm:default and a terminal window. Can anyone help I know its nothing to do with the video card if thats any help.
