I believe I have resolved this issue.
How:   I used the VESA driver instead of the driver used by X -configure.
Why:
     My monitor is connected to the video card via a digital cable.
     When perusing through the monitor manual, I saw attributes
     for both digital and analog operation.  The digital section made
     reference to VESA.  Then I recalled seeing something about a
     VESA driver in the XFree documentation.  This may not be the
     most 'correct' solution but it's working.

do you have a tv out on the r128 card?
if so unplug it when booting linux, and it will solve your problems
(hopefully).
