Hello,

I am trying to configure XFree86 with SuSE Linux 7.3 Professional (XF86 updated to
version 4.2). When I try to start XF86cfg, the screen turns black, and the system
speaker starts beeping (sometimes only one time, sometimes till I restart the
computer). The only way to get it working again is to reset the computer.
When I try to start the SuSE-tool SaX2, my card (tried a Voodoo5 5500 and an ATI
XpertWork), the graphical configuration sreen is displayed half a second, then - with
my
Voodoo card - a green D is flashing on the screen (in text mode again), with my ATI
card, the screen gets black.

In some forums I found the suggestion to change the entry "append=enableapic
vga=0x0317" to "append=noapic vga=0x0317" or "append=disableapic vga=0x0317",
but it didn't work.

I could not find a log file for XFree86 in /var/log. The SaX.log file contains the
following:

===========================================================

Does anybody know how to get the graphics working, what could be wrong or where I
can find some information (for newbies)?

Thanks,

Ignaz Forster
