Hi,
try this instead, append this line to the end of your $HOME/.bashrc

PS1="[\s \u@\h \w]"$

Then to see if it's working do a 

[yourprompt]$  source .bashrc

And the prompt should change for you.  

Note that this is NOT an XFree86 problem and any further questions should 
be directed to a shell-scripting list/forum.  Try reading "man bash" (or 
even better "info man" for more information.)
