I am running Slackware 8.0 on a Pentium 90 system
with a S3 Trio 64 display. I installed XFree86 4.2.0 hoping for better S3
support. XFree86 -configure detects the video card and writes up a XF86Config
file with 60 display adapters!
PCI 0:9:0
PCI 16:0:0
PCI 16:0:1
...
PCI 17:27:0
When I try to startx I see the display initializing
(The way it does at boot) over and over I don't know if it would go on forever,
but after about 5 minutes I just pressed the reset button. (CTRL-ALT-Backspace
had no effect.)
I trimmed all the extra screens, monitors, and
displays from the file, leaving only Screen0, Monitor0 and Display0. X will load
that way, but the s3 driver leaves a bunch of warnings like "No matching
Device section for instance (Bus ID PCI:17:27:0) found." And I can't seem to
increase the display resolution. The driver thinks the card has insufficient
memory to reach anything over VGA.
I have a nice 8 meg ATI card, but it won't
work with that old processor. ;-)
So has anyone seen this before? Any
suggestions?
