After many tweaks, suggestions, and more tweaks, what worked is switching to Redhat 7.3, which supports the 7500 with no trouble (picked up in the install program actually) and I think supports the 8500 as well. If anyone else has trouble with this card, you may want to try this distribution. The Xfree is still 4.2.0, so I'm not sure what the difference is. If anyone is interested, and can give directions, I'll poke around to try to find out. Thanks to all who responded.
