[Newbie]garbled screen

I installed Red Hat 7.2 on an IBM Thinkpad 560e and ran into a lot of problems with X. When trying to use the Trident driver it just put vertical lines on the screen or left the screen completly dark. But when using the svga driver it displays correctly, with the exception that the upper region of the screen is not always updated correctly. The mouse-cursor will not enter this region but will be wrapped to the bottom of the screen and then overdraws the screencontents for some time, but will eventually stop doing that again. I have been experimenting with a lot of settings and options to no avail and am beginning to despair Does someone have a solution to this problem? thx philipp
