The reasonable way to find out which version of X you are running is to
either do X -version
or look in the log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log)
Once you know what you are running, assuming you have both 3.3.6 and 4.x.x then you
can switch
from the one to the other by changing /etc/X11/X according to the description of RH
you mention,
i.e. if you run 3.3.6 and want to run 4.x.x then rename your /etc/X11/X in order to
have a backup
and recreate an /etc/X11/X as a symlink to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
