The only way how to get off this > situation is to reboot. Try doing this. ->After you monitor goes in to safe mode.. -> wait a while -> Hit a couplea <enter>s ->type <ctrl>-<esc> (This might be gnome specific) -> Hit "Up Arrow" ONCE -> Hit<enter> TWICE well.... just for fun :)) I call this a blind logout. good luck with your problem.
