Hey this happened to me too!!! Well I think my monitor
automatically turned off (no safe mode). Lemme
remember what was I trying!!.... I think I was trying
VESA driver with X3.x thats bundled with RH7.3. When I
switched to 4.2 it worked ok.

 The only way how to get off this

Try doing this.
->After you monitor goes in to safe mode..
-> wait a while
-> Hit a couplea <enter>s
->type <ctrl>-<esc> (This might be gnome specific)
-> Hit "Up Arrow" ONCE
-> Hit<enter> TWICE
