hello everyone,

i didn't find anything about this in the archives, so i hope someone can
give me a hint:

i installed xfree86 4.2 from the sources, created a config file (with
-configure) and copied that one to /etc/XF86Config. using startx i run the
xserver and it looks all as it is supposed to - except for this strange
flickering in the upper third of the screen. it occurs apparently
at random (may not occur for about 30secs or a minute and then starts
again), causing the upper third or quarter of the screen to
flash about 1 time every 2 or 3 seconds. i wondered whether this might be
a problem with my config file and inserted the modelines from another
configuration which is running fine on the same hardware with an older
version of xfree - which didn't change anything. i used this manual
configuration tool (actually both - the one with the gui which i could set
up the screen size with and the other one, asking for mouse, monitor freqs
etc.) which didn't change anything either. with the older version of
xfree it was working, but i'd like to upgrade to 4.2... the log file isn't
giving any warnings and so i'm lost. could someone please give me a
hint...

again, my configuration: k6ii on a dfi k6xv3+ (via chipset), ati rage iic
video controller, standard 17" crt monitor (scott), i'm using linux from
scratch with a 2.4.18 kernel. the xserver is using the ati module. the
graphics mode (i tried 640x480 and 1024x768) seems not to influence the
behaviour. i also tried the standard vga module for xfree, but it couldn't
find a suitable graphics mode to start in.

any help appreciated,
v.
