Just FYI,
I just installed RedHat 7.3 on a Dell Inspiron 7500. I found that the
default install created an XF86Config file ( /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 )
which had too restrictive of a vertical refresh rate. This cause the
modes for 1400 x 1050 to be rejected by X.
On Red Hat 7.3, To get your Dell Inspriron 7500 to work in 1400x1050
mode, modify the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file as follows:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
...
VertRefresh 50-100 # <-- this is the line to change
... # was 50-70, too restrictive
EndSection
I put lots of key words in there for people searching the web for
hints. Maybe it will help someone in the future. Using anything but
native resolutions on a dot matrix display looks really bad.
FWIW.
