Thanks but the problem is we're getting rid of Hummingbird exceed!!  Thats
why we've had to get things working with xfree86 in the first place.

If you are running Putty from a MSWindows environment, you have to
export the display
output to your console. This is performed introducing in your
.bash_profile a line like

export DISPLAY='<ipaddress>'

or simply typing it.
Then you have to run in your PC a program like Hummingbird Exceed, to
import
screens. There are other programs that do the same job. Then, when you
start an x
application the screens will be imported onto your display
