Chances are you overwrote all of your xdm and twm settings when installing the new version of Xfree. Redhat includes a program called prefdm that seems to not work so well once you reinstall Xfree. What you can do, is edit your /etc/inittab file, and at the end of the file you will see a line about prefdm, or something ?dm. I'm at work with a windows machine, so I can't tell you exactly what the line says. You will want to change this line so that it starts up gdm. Just change the line for the gdm binary. K?
