Your Microsoft Mail User Agent is putting bizarre, non-standard characters into your posts making them hard to read. Have you made sure that you used the syntax "DISPLAY=hostname:0" ? The "0" in this specifies the display number. When you say "whenever I try to run a program requiring X" does that mean that you actually have an X session running?
