may be that you have to use the nvidia drivers anyway, or plain vesa till a good driver is available.  but i was wondering what version of linux as well, there are quite a few, each with different version numbers and linking libraries of several versions as well, any of the differences could cause odd reactions.  the v-bios checksum may be different cause the cmos copy of the bios is corrupted, or the bios extension on the card might be frigged, if it has one.  also check that interrupt 10 is not reserved for an isa card or something which is causing problems
