I had the same problem with X locking up on me using RH 8. It would do it under KDE and Gnome both. Windows XP would run fine. I am running and Atlon XP 1600+ and using and NVIDA GEFORCE2 MX 440 AGP. My solution was to remove RH 8 and went back to RH 7.3 and all is running fine now.
