You can exit the X session by pressing the key combination control+alt+back
space. If your computer is set to boot to a graphical log in you will just
get back to that, if you boot to a text login you will be returned to the
spot where you type "startx".
Assuming you boot to a graphical login as most newbies do, you will need to
edit the file: /etc/inittab (as root) look for the last line below:
#
# inittab This file describes how the INIT process should set up
# the system in a certain run-level.
#
# Author: Miquel van Smoorenburg, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
# Modified for RHS Linux by Marc Ewing and Donnie Barnes
#
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#
id:3:initdefault:
If indeed you do boot up to the graphical login your line will read:
id:3:initdefault:
simply change the 5 to a 3 ans save the changes.
When you now boot up you will see the text mode login prompt. simply log in
there as either a normal user or as root. (just in case you don't know how to
start an X session, the command is "startx") Now when you want to end your X
session the above key combination will get you back to the text mode, loged
on as whoever started the session.
