Well Chuck, It is Christmas eve, and one never knows whats is in the parcels. XF86 may be one. I have just slipped off the persons around me that want to watch a movie (on TV) that I don't like.
I am not sure this will help, but try it out. Start your X by startx (not xdm). What (how) ever the X comes up try [Ctrl][Alt] Fn where Fn is the function button with n being your log in screen (F1-F6). This may give you some hints of what failed in your X start up that is not always logged in the /var/adm/XFree86...log file, if ever. Have a nice Christmas and a Happy New year.
