Chris,
I don't mind at all, I'm glad to help. Sorry that Christmas has delayed my
answer. I'm afraid that I'm not going to be much help with this one, but I'll
give you a couple of things to check. First, does the taskbar reappear when
you move the cursor to the bottom of the screen? If so, you have "auto hide
enabled. To disable that right click on an empty spot on the taskbar and
select "preferences-->"hiding" and uncheck the automatic hiding button.
If the taskbar is not set to auto hide, there is the possibility that you are
running a lower resolution than the max and you are seeing a virtual desktop.
Does the desktop seem to move when you move the cursor to the sides or top or
bottom of the screen? If so, try the key combination "control+alt+ plus or
minus (on the number pad with numbers lock enabled) this will cycle through
the working resolutions. This may enable you to see the whole desktop at
once. If you see no change, or it seems to try to change resolutions, try
removing the resolution that isn't working from the XF86Config-4 file.
Lastly, if none of that solves the problem, log on as root andcreate another
user, if you haven't done that already. Log on as that user and see if the X
session behaves normally if so, get back to me and I'll explain the next
step.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
