Hi,
I have the same problem with my compaq. Linux itself is installed but
x-windows is showing the exact same behavior as described below. Does any
one have an xf86config file that I can use? What was the solution?

Did you ensure that you have a .xinitrc file in your base directory? (/root
if
root, or /home/username)
pico .xinitrc , in this file, make sure there is something like "exec
icewm".
so for .xinitrc
----
exec icewm
---
replace icewm with whatever wm you have, usually twm or kwm will be present,
then you can switch to one on the menu.
Also, not sure for laptops, but plug and play must be disabled or it can
caquse
problems with pci cards (and maybe laptop, no sure, but cant hurt).
and ensure you start X with 'startx', also try to configure with:
XFree86 -configure
