You could do what I do which is to use osmxapi to download the full area that I'm generally within. Getting the data from osmxapi gets around the 0.25deg limit that the main OSM API has. I can't fit the whole of the UK on my Garmin memory (8MB limit in my case) but I can do a big chunk of it centred on my home. Then run mkgmap on the data and upload to my Garmin using Sendmap. It take me about 5 mins each time I do this (a bit extra for the time to upload the map via serial) so I do it regularly and that way I am always out mapping with the latest and greatest on the Garmin.
