NaviGPSs and Garmin Gekos seem to be pretty popular amongst OSMers, along with PDAs with custom software (osmtracker). As my Navi is down for repairs, I'm considering trying out a Konet BGL-32: they're quite a bargain, and provide just the data needed for OSM: tracks and waypoints. You will find a (semi)comprehensive list of hardware here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/GPS_reviews I suggest you not to buy any unit that isn't able to hold tracks *and* waypoints by itself. Its usefulness would be limited for OSM purposes.
