For a number of reasons I haven't been able to do any more work on this since
I bought the new eTrex. Hopefully this will now change, but I've forgotten
what I had learned, and am having to start afresh.

Today I got a half hour walk saved. I have the serial-to-usb adapter which
worked with the old eTrex and this laptop, so I entered

gpsbabel -t -i garmin -f /dev/ttyUSB0 -o gpx -F track1.gpx

which is the command that worked with the old one, but got

[ERROR] GPS_Packet_Read: Timeout. No data received.
GARMIN:Can't init /dev/ttyUSB0

What am I missing? I definitely have it set to 'garmin'. The adapter flashes
reassuringly when attached. I have a usb mouse attached also, but there is
only one /dev/ttyUSBx. Is the adapter not being recognised?

Anne
