Sorry, I don't understand.  I thought that you couldn't do any editing of any 
kind on the original layer?  I'm sure the wiki said it had to be converted to 
a data layer first.

My intention was to simply remove the bit that refers to my garden path, so 
that the recording started at the road-side.  I was then going to upload the 
trace, then do the download and edit bit.
