... got it now. The interpretation of the data is up to the renderer. There are mainly two out there: Mapnik and Osmarender Mapnik: http://svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/rendering/mapnik/osm-template.xml http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Mapnik Osmarender: http://svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/rendering/osmarender6/ http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Osmarender I'm not sure if this is the current version of Osmarender, I'm confused by the SVN layout. But in the XML files there are rules which define how each tag is to be rendered.
