And that's the whole reason that deprecated is fairly meaningless. Anyone can choose their own tags. Some will render with some renderers and not with others (and some won't render at all). But if I were maintaining the stylesheets for any given layer then while I would probably put some effort into supporting the new barrier=stile tag (rendering it in exactly the sameway as highway=stile tag), I can't see any reason to ever stop supporting the old tag. It's extra work to remove the support (when some people who have been tagging for ages and don't keep up to date with the ebb and flow of the Map Features wiki page may still use it anyway - I know some people still tag oneway=true instead of oneway=yes even though almost every validation tool that I know of highlights this as an error), where such effort could probably be more productively spent supporting newer popular tags.
