Somebody on our list for Romania just reported that the trunk version is
able to do osm->garmin without any intermediate polish format.

Sorry if it is unclear, I have translated exactly as it was in the
original text (I don't have a garmin unit, so it didn't matter that much
to me). The city he was using is a Romanian city, Brasov.

I applied on it (the city osm extract he was using) osm2mp and I got the
brasov.map
perl osm2mp.pl brasov.osm > brasov.mp

I used the last mkmap version, newer than the wiki version, grabbed from
the devel

> mkgmap-r904>java -jar mkgmap.jar --route map.mp --mapnamee=MapBV --
> country-name=Romania --country-abbr=ROU --region-abbr=BV --latin1 --
> net --gmapsupp

That is the command line he used.

Good luck.
