Hi Joe,

highway=road definitely renders thicker than highway=unclassified.
This value is considered work-todo, which is nearly an error. It is meant to 
make someone who has the needed knowledge create meaningful tags.
Don't tag for the renderer, though.

If you are sure that the way is unpaved, mark it as surface=unpaved.
Don't tag something that isn't there. Interpretation of data is the user's job.

In Tunisia unpaved should be the default, IMO, at least outside of the bigger 
cities. In this case, the surface is unclear. Even in Tunis lots of roads are 
unpaved (or were when I was last there). In the tourist centers, the situation 
can be completely different.
