See my earlier reply ... You are right. In the UK 'footway' is the official
term for what our American cousins call a 'sidewalk'. However, the use of
the tag 'footway' is so enshrined in OSM practice (and 'path' tends to be
reserved for something rather informal and faint and rural that does not fit
any more precise category) so I still support 'footway' despite the
linguistic glitch!

Just been out in my van and I noticed a road sign that read 'No Footway for
700yrds' in this sense it was referring to the pavement along the road.
