See my earlier reply ... You are right. In the UK 'footway' is the official term for what our American cousins call a 'sidewalk'. However, the use of the tag 'footway' is so enshrined in OSM practice (and 'path' tends to be reserved for something rather informal and faint and rural that does not fit any more precise category) so I still support 'footway' despite the linguistic glitch!
