Pieren, Following your response I investigated further and note that the way ID and history of the original way appears to be preserved in one of the newly split ways. So I guess I could retrospectively add a note to the split way that is missing its history, referring to the other split way in a similar manner to that mentioned by Frederik Ramm in josm-dev Better History, the link to which you kindly provided.
