Yes, this is a very good idea; you know the layout of the school grounds, so much of it can be created from aerial imagery if it is available in your area. The only thing OSM can't easily accommodate would be maps of the building interiors.
If there are things not visible due to tree cover, and if you can borrow or find someone with a GPS or GPS-enabled phone, you can get even more details of sidewalks, etc. However, the standard auto navigation - Garmin GPS for example, is not easy to use for mapping purposes.
