It sounds like you're approaching things the right way, but generally don't be *too* afraid of changing existing data. With time, you will learn how to judge the quality of existing data by looking for cues like "source" tags etc. Adding lots of "fixme" and "note" type comments will also assist future users in deciding what to make of *your* edits...
