Does this help? Maybe not 'as-is', but as the basis for some other extraction method. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Openlayers_POI_layer_example_2 I wrote it. It was a quick hack but served my purpose. I had some help from people on this mailing list and I'd be happy to discuss or explain it further. I am sure that others will be equally as helpful.
