According to (the old) osmdoc stats, landuse has 860 different values and salt_pond is not in the top 100. In tagwatch, the tag is present 9 times in North America and 53 times in Europe. It's less than piste, winter_sports, railway, etc. Just to say that probably many more popular landuse values could be rendered before salt_pond (even though I'm part of the group who pushed this tag used by the Corine Land Cover import).
