That trick worked as you said.
It was a bit tedious as the 'island' also comprises of several
satellite islands, it serves my purpose though :-)
then re-order by instructions
1) search in JOSM for all ways tagged as natural = coastline, and en mass
change to natural = land
2) draw the big box and tag as natural = coastline
It shouldn't take more than a minute to do :)
I wonder how the t...@h osmrenderer deals with the problem?

effectively you have a circle (OK the island may not be a circle but you
get my drift), and you want everything outside of it to be blue, but I'm
not aware of any SVG to do such a thing.
I think the solution is in JOSM draw a big square round the island and
tag it as natural = coastline, and then change the real coastline tags to
natural = land
