First you need to open the preferences panel (hit F12 or from the
menu Edit > Preferences)
Then at the bottom left of this panel you will see the advanced
preferences icon (it looks like a page with a spanner / wrench on it),
click that icon
Search for mappaint.fontsize and edit the value, try a
size of 12
Click OK, and that's it
