I mentioned Project of the Week to an OSM contributor recently and was surprised to find that they were surprised to hear about PotW. It was suggested that I should be talking about Project of the Week more often, and specifically, on this list. So here we go, a quick post about Project of the Week.
Project of the Week was started by Steve Coast in February 2010 based on the great results of the mappers who collectively mapped Haiti after the earthquake. Since then, PotW has incorporated suggestions from the community and has been running weekly for about six months. The loose goals of Project of the Week are to answer some questions that mappers may ask themselves, like: What should I map next? If you keep mapping the way that you have always mapped, you may find that you run out of things nearby to add to OpenStreetMap. PotW might suggest mapping something that you hadn't considered before. How do I map that? So many people participate in OSM from different backgrounds and with different experiences. When I want to map something that is unusual to me, how have other mappers placed that in OpenStreetMap. What can we do together? Mapping Haiti after the earthquake showed us that we can do a lot of mapping in a short period of time. What else can we do? Not in terms of emergency response, but what can we do as part of our regular mapping activities to participate with others and improve OSM? Since the Project of the Week started, topics have ranged from parks and sport fields to power lines and gardens. Some projects have looked at checking and improving data with quality assurance tools, or even creating icons for use in OpenStreetMap renderers. Some projects have combined our efforts in one remote location and others are suggestions for mapping close to home. So enjoy Project of the Week.
