Ah, good good, sorry to misunderstand. :)
With mkgmap you should, in theory, be able to use any tag you like if you
put the appropriate entry in your 'lines' file. Something like this:
national_grid=100km [0x27 resolution 18]
national_grid=10km [0x27 resolution 20]
national_grid=1km [0x27 resolution 22]
would mean that you saw more of the grid as you zoomed in.
