Hello OSM Newbies list. Project of the Week has offered an idea for something to map each week for the last year. In the fall we added a Project of the Month. PotW does not restrict what you should map; it only suggesting what you night map. The hope is that projects will encourage you to map things that you might not have considered mapping, and that you'll enjoy telling OpenStreetMap more about your neighbourhood.
Now we add a monthly theme to the projects. April 2011 is OpenStreetMap food month. The project of the month is to add farmers' markets and marketplaces. These are place that you can buy food directly from the producer. Ideally you can get fresh food ingredients that could only be fresher if you grew them yourself. This week, the Project of the Week is grocery stores. Again the focus is on fresh ingredients, and still on the "gatherer" portion of our "hunter / gatherer" heritage. Fresh fruit and vegetables can be purchased at greengrocers and supermarkets and those are the PotW for this week. Later in the month we'll look at food ingredients for the "hunter" aspect of our diets, as well as specialty and processed foods, rather than the simple ingredients. Take an interest in the food infrastructure around you and participate in the Project of the Week and Project of the Month. Suggestions are always welcome on the proposal page on the wiki and half a dozen contributors have offered guest projects since we began last year.
