I have been using a Nuvi 255 and have had no issue other than the fact that the units only seem to last 6 months or so when strapped to a motorcycle. So I stocked up on them when the local Canadian Tire had them on sale for $49. But for maps, I'd recommend you take a look at the near real-time service offered at http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ . Looks like the site is currently using data from July 25. Once there, you can either select individual countries or select your own tile set for customized coverage. You will get an email link to a download when the map has been processed. Looks now like there is only about a 5 minute processing time. Download the gmapsupp.img file and as Richard said, just load it onto your micro SD in the /garmin directory. On the 255, I then have to go to Tools/Settings/Map/Map Info on the unit to uncheck the Garmin database and check the OSM World Routable. Et Voila!
It's a great service. Love it.
