Thanks. Now I'm wondering about a related issue: if I delete this node
(which was part of a GNIS import) and a couple of years from now someone
imports GNIS data again to pick up its updates, will we then see the old
data in the map again? Are these mass imports a one-time-only event?

It's very unlikely that there will be another import unless by chance there someone has created data that is of greater quality than we would typically see in OSM.

There is some active work on reusing our changes. So deletions and moves can be detected. If you later create an area polygon for the element, copy all the tags from the node to the polygon, then remove the node.
