I'm using FoxtrotGPS with a similar setup: ASUS U36-JC laptop, Lubuntu 13.04, gpsd, and a BU-353 USB GPS receiver. There is no search and no routing (and consequently, no turn-by-turn instructions). It does work well to show my current position overlaid on OSM tiles, and for recording tracks and waypoints for later editing in JOSM.
