I am using a Lexmark 1020 Color Jetprinter on a machine running kernel
2.4.18 Debian. I have visited http://www.linuxprinting.org and I read
enough to get a printer set up (supposedly). However, I have yet to get my
printer to make any sort of sound or movement indicating that it receives
messages from the machine. I'm still pretty new at printing stuff, but I've
decided to start with lpd and then (possibly) change from there, once I got
it working (I also tried lprng to see if that would work). I downloaded the
drivers for the printer (including maintenance utilities) and the lpdomatic
script along with its accompanying file specific to the printer. I don't
notice any errors in the log file when running the scripts--it appears that
they are running correctly. But nothing happens with the printer. I think
it's something at a lower level.

Here's what I've tried:
-I checked the syslog to see what happens when the parport and lp modules
are loaded at startup. Actually when the parport module is loaded it
detects the printer and displays its make and model.

-I've also tried the maintenance utilities (for moving the carriage back and
forth for changing cartridges). They don't return any errors, but the
printer does nothing.

-I tried using other ports lp1, lp2, etc. to see if I was mistaken on the
port I was trying to use. When using those ports, the devices could not be
found.

-I have tried simple tests like "echo "hello" > /dev/lp0" or catting files
and redirecting them to /dev/lp0. No errors, but no response from the
printer.

Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks
