I really like iptraf for that one. You can apt-get install it. It's a
console based app (in ncurses) with a GUI look. Very slick.

In Gkrellm, you can do it too with the network option, but iptraf will
give you a much more detailed description. You can see how fast data is
moving on a given card (like eth0) or you can see speeds for each
protocol: http, ssh, etc. Good stuff.
