First off, congratulations on your Rush CD's. They
rock.
Secondly, most people on the UUG wholeheartedly
recommend Ogg. I have done several blind tests,
comparing ogg to mp3, wma, real audio, and quick time
formats. In every case I found that ogg was the best
quality (according to my ears -- no too scientific
though).
Most, if not all, of your music playing applications
in Linux support ogg.
Winamp 2.80 and higher supports ogg as well, if you
have to you use that other OS.

Another option is to rip them using a lossless
compression, like FLAC. You can apt-get flac and
xmms-flac (go to the UUG web site's link on
apt-repository if you haven't already discovered the
beauty of apt-get). The advantage of ripping lossless
is that it is about half the size of a full .wav file
without losing *any* quality. You can then convert
the songs to any other format, such as ogg or mp3
later on. Just depends on you hard drive space
requirements and your audio quality requirements. Of
course, my ears can't tell the difference between a
flac and a 160 bitrate targeted ogg. Mileage may
vary.

BTW, Grip is a pretty good music ripper, as you might
already know.

Hope that helps.
