As far as I understood you can't boot a normal system without a video card. Most motherboards will fail immediately on the POST (Power On Self Test) without a video card connected, and will not boot further.
I know of a couple specialized file server machines that boot without a video card, but not a normal home PC brand. If anyone knows more, I also am interested to find out...
