I wanted to be more specific about the audio problem, and now it happened, so here's the exact message:

Couldn't open audio

Please check that:
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other programs is bloking the soundcard
Your soundcard is configured properly

You're having problems with selecting the correct audio device in xmms. I'm assuming that you are using KDE and have arts turned on. with xmms up and running hit ctrl-P. You should be able to select arts as the output device. Now if arts is not there, or it still doesn't work after this, then go for option #2. Turn off arts completely (you should be able to do this in the control center) then select oss as the output for xmms.

In my opinion, arts is a pain in the butt. There are some programs in the works to eventually replace arts, but we're not there yet. Unless you are using some KDE-specific sound programs, turn it off and use OSS directly. You'll be much happier.

Art
