The ``right'' way to do this depends on your distro. RH9 has a nifty network setup utility with fancy graphics and shiny buttons and everything. I suggest you use that.
Under Debian, there is a file /etc/network/interfaces that you can modify to set up your networking when you boot. You can muck with your SysV init scripts directly too. /etc/rc.boot can contain scripts to set up your networking. I assume there is a DHCP server running on your network. Use the ``pump'' utility to configure your network settings for your network. Or ``dhcpcd''. But try the nice GUI thing first.
