When I reinstalled my server two months ago on a new 80 GB hard drive I
got that error. Everything else seemed normal (along with Western
Digital's diagnostic tool), so I just decided to install on it (without
doing the bad blocks check). One month later the hard drive crashed and
the bios even stopped detecting it. Luckily I had made a backup a week
or two before.
The point of my story ( :-) ) is that if it is failing on that error it
might mean there are serious problems with the disk. Do a few extra disk
checks on it and see if anything looks strange. Also, do your backups.
This isn't really the answer you're looking for but I don't want you to
have the same headache I did.
